Shaanxi Jiaogulan (陕西绞股蓝)

Pingli, located in the golden triangle of Shaanxi is surrounded by the misty Qinling Mountains to the north and shielded by the magnificent Ba Mountains to the south. The area features numerous mountains and winding streams, abundant sunlight, ample rainfall, fertile soil, lush vegetation, and fresh air. Pingli County has the distinction of being the earliest region in the country to develop and utilize the jiaogulan (gynostemma) plant, and it is also the largest artificial cultivation base for jiaogulan in the nation. Among the 16 known species in the Caryopteris genus worldwide, the county is home to 7 of them, with saponin content reaching as high as 12.2%. The unique regional micro-ecological environment is highly conducive to the growth and development of jiaogulan. The exported Bluebeard grass from Pingli to Japan boasts superior physicochemical indicators compared to other production areas, earning it the title of “hometown of jiaogulan.”

What is Jiaogulan?

Jiaogulan, also known as Gynostemma pentaphyllum, is a vine native to China, Japan, and other parts of Asia. It is a member of the cucumber family and has been used for centuries in traditional Chinese medicine.

Jiaogulan is often referred to as “Southern Ginseng” or “Miracle Grass” due to its purported health benefits and adaptogenic properties. It is believed to have various effects, such as boosting the immune system, reducing cholesterol levels, improving digestion, and promoting overall well-being.

Jiaogulan contains several active compounds, including gypenosides, which are believed to be responsible for its medicinal properties. These compounds are thought to have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and potential anticancer effects.

 Jiaogulan Benefits

Jiaogulan, or Gynostemma pentaphyllum, is believed to offer several potential health benefits:

Adaptogenic Properties: Jiaogulan is considered an adaptogen, which means it may help the body adapt to stress and maintain balance. It is believed to support overall well-being and resilience.

Antioxidant Effects: The active compounds in gynostemma, such as gypenosides, are thought to have antioxidant properties, which can help combat oxidative stress and reduce cellular damage.

Immune Support: Some research suggests that jiaogulan may have immune-boosting effects, potentially enhancing the body’s natural defense mechanisms.

Cholesterol Regulation: There is evidence to suggest that jiaogulan may help regulate cholesterol levels, promoting cardiovascular health.

Anti-inflammatory Potential: Jiaogulan’s compounds may possess anti-inflammatory properties, which could be beneficial for reducing inflammation in the body.

Digestive Health: Traditional use and some preliminary studies indicate that jiaogulan may support digestive function and gut health.

Potential Anticancer Properties: Some studies have explored the potential anticancer effects of jiaogulan’s compounds, though more research is needed in this area.

It’s important to note that while these benefits are supported by traditional use and some preliminary research, more comprehensive clinical studies are necessary to fully understand the extent and mechanisms of jiaogulan’s effects on human health. Always consult with a healthcare professional before using jiaogulan or any other herbal supplement, especially if you have underlying health conditions or are taking medications.

How to enjoy jiaogulan?

There are several ways to enjoy jiaogulan:

Herbal Tea: gynostemma leaves can be dried and brewed into a tea. Simply steep the dried leaves in hot water for a few minutes, strain, and enjoy a warm cup of jiaogulan tea. You can also blend jiaogulan leaves with other herbal teas for added flavor.

Infused Water: Add fresh or dried jiaogulan leaves to a pitcher of water and let it infuse for a few hours or overnight in the refrigerator. This creates a refreshing and hydrating jiaogulan-infused water that you can enjoy throughout the day.

Smoothies: Add jiaogulan leaves or jiaogulan tea to your favorite smoothie recipe. It can add a mild herbal flavor and provide an extra boost of nutrients.

Culinary Uses: Jiaogulan leaves can be used in cooking, similar to how you would use other leafy greens. You can sauté or stir-fry jiaogulan leaves with other vegetables or add them to soups and stews
