How much caffeine does green tea have?
The amount of caffeine in green tea can vary widely depending on the type of green tea, how it’s processed, and how it’s brewed. On average, an 8-ounce (240-milliliter) cup of green tea contains between 30 and 50 mg of caffeine.
For comparison, the same volume of black tea typically contains 40 to 70 mg of caffeine, and brewed coffee contains roughly 95 to 165 mg.
Factors that can affect the caffeine content in your cup of green tea include:
- Tea Quality: Higher quality leaves tend to contain more caffeine.
- Tea Variety: Some types of green tea, like matcha, which is a powdered form of green tea, contain more caffeine than loose leaf or tea bag varieties because you consume the entire tea leaf.
- Steeping Time and Temperature: Steeping your tea for longer or at higher temperatures can extract more caffeine (as well as more antioxidants and flavor).
- Leaf Size and Shape: Finely cut tea leaves, as found in tea bags, have a larger surface area and will release caffeine more quickly than whole tea leaves.
To manage caffeine intake, you can adjust these variables to your taste and sensitivity.
